Almost 300 people showed up for herring festivities and debate with the newly appointed Minister of Fisheries on the purse seiner «Brennholm» during the annual «Arendalsweek».

– The fishing industry is the most fantastic and future oriented line of business Norway has. I want to be remembered as a seafood-minister that lay the grounds in a long-term and predictable way, so that business may create the wealth we’re going to live off in the future, said the fresh Minister of Fishery Harald Tom Nesvik. The debate was his first public appearance as minister.

Herring festivities

For the second year in a row, and with help from Geelmuyden Kiese, the Norwegian Pelagic Association arranged a herring party and debate aboard the «Brennholm», one of the world’s most modern and advanced purse seiners. The goal is to show the value created by the fishing industries in Norway.

– I can imagine they’ll be surprised when they get aboard and see how high-tech our industry has become. This is how real value is created in our country, says Lars Einar Sandtorv, owner of the “Brennholm”. Sandtorv has been a sailor since he was 14 years old.

This year’s event started with a debate on deck, before moving below to herring and a concert with Bjarne Brøndbo. Close to 300 people took part in the event. The Pelagic Association was very satisfied with the turnout.

– There has been around 350 people aboard every day. That means we’ve had close to 1000 visitors during the week, says Mariann Frantsen, head of the Pelagic Association.

Fight against liberalization

The Pelagic Union is worried about pressure to deregulate the fishing industry and is signalling a fight against the one-sided liberalization.

– Big players in our line of business is working for a great liberalization that will place all the Norwegian fishing quotas with a small number of ships.  That would harm local businesses and innovation along our entire coast. We’ll fight to make sure we have a diverse and local fishing fleet, also in the future. The smaller fishing boats complements the larger ones. We show this aboard the «Brennholm», says Frantsen.
